Shoprite is Africa's largest retailer with unmatched distribution reach. Their Supplier Development Programme targets black-owned FMCG, food production, and fresh produce businesses that can supply into the Shoprite/Checkers ecosystem.

Like Woolworths, the value-chain filter is the primary gate. But Shoprite's volume requirements are higher and food safety compliance (hygiene, consistency, cold-chain management) is non-negotiable. The programme provides both financial support and technical assistance to help qualifying suppliers reach Shoprite standards.

Kayzi Advisory NoteAfrica's largest retailer — the scale opportunity is significant but the compliance bar is high. Best for established food producers with existing or near-ready production systems. Not for early-stage businesses.

Contextual Fit · Business Substance · Use of Funds Logic

  • Existing Shoprite supplier or credible potential supplier
  • Business in FMCG, food production, or fresh produce
  • 51%+ black ownership (BBBEE)
  • Able to meet Shoprite food safety and hygiene standards
  • Sufficient production capacity for retail volumes (or a funded plan to reach it)
  • South African registered entity
  • Not in FMCG, food production, or fresh produce
  • No credible path to a Shoprite supplier relationship
  • Unable to meet food safety and hygiene compliance requirements
  • Production capacity far below retail volumes with no realistic scale plan
  • Black ownership below 51%
  • Businesses primarily seeking general working capital unrelated to supply
Common rejection reasonNot FMCG or food sector; cannot meet retailer food safety standards; no supplier pathway; insufficient production capacity.

Proof of 51%+ black ownership, BBBEE certificate, food safety compliance evidence, production capacity documentation, existing supplier agreement or supplier development plan, and CIPC registration.
