TIA supports South African technology innovations that have commercial potential but are still pre-commercial. The Seed Fund targets proof-of-concept and early development stages — after the idea exists but before full market deployment.

The innovation case is the primary gate. TIA evaluates the novelty, feasibility, and commercial potential of the technology — not just the business. Timelines are long, and the approval process is rigorous. Budget 6–18 months from application to funding.

Kayzi Advisory NoteLong timelines and rigorous evaluation. Best for genuine technology innovations with clear IP. Do not surface for non-tech businesses or those without a defensible innovation case.

Financial Visibility · Business Substance · Use of Funds Logic · Ownership & Governance

  • Technology innovation with clear novelty and commercial potential
  • South African registered entity or individual inventor
  • Innovation is pre-commercial (not yet fully deployed at scale)
  • Clear proof-of-concept or working prototype exists
  • Credible plan for how the innovation will reach the market
  • Willing to grant TIA rights/interests as per funding agreement
  • No clear technology innovation — standard business ideas do not qualify
  • Innovation already at full commercial scale
  • No proof-of-concept or working prototype at seed stage
  • No credible commercialisation pathway
  • Non-South African entities (without local partnerships)
  • Innovations in sectors excluded from TIA's mandate
Common rejection reasonWeak or insufficiently novel innovation case; no working prototype; no commercial pathway; technology not ready for seed stage support.

Detailed technical description of the innovation, proof-of-concept evidence, commercial market analysis, IP status (patents filed or in progress), business plan for commercialisation, and CVs of the core technical team.

TIA opens application windows periodically. Monitor the TIA website for current calls. Applications are submitted online and go through a multi-stage evaluation process.
